Indigenous Mental Health First Aid

At Morningstar Counseling and Consultation, we're dedicated to providing culturally responsive mental health support for Indigenous communities. Our specialized Indigenous Mental Health First Aid (IMHFA) training program equips participants with the skills to recognize and respond to mental health challenges within Native American, Alaska Native, and First Nations contexts.

What is Indigenous Mental Health First Aid?

IMHFA is an evidence-based, culturally adapted version of the internationally recognized Mental Health First Aid program. It teaches participants how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges, with a specific focus on Indigenous experiences and cultural contexts.

IMHFA Training Program Course Content

Our comprehensive IMHFA training covers:

  • Recognition of mental health challenges through an Indigenous lens
  • Understanding historical trauma and its impact on mental health
  • Information on depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, and suicide in Indigenous communities
  • A culturally appropriate 5-step action plan for crisis and non-crisis situations
  • Traditional healing practices and their role in mental health support
  • Available professional, community, and cultural resources

Training Approach
